Passion to Teach

We are proud to have a faculty whose passion is demonstrated in all areas of our program. The retention rate of our talented team speaks to the value of living in this supportive community. Lopez residents consistently pass bond measures, volunteer in the classroom and take action on issues affecting the well being of children, staff and faculty.

As a small rural district, we enjoy many benefits often unavailable in large schools.  On Lopez, our teaching staff of 28 serves a student body of about 220 students, giving us an enviable 1:14 teacher/student ratio. On Decatur Island, one teacher currently teaches 3 students. Our teachers average 16 years of experience, 68% have masters degrees, and several are national board certified.

What these statistics can't reflect is the deep level of commitment, caring and compassion our teachers bring to the classroom. Teachers here follow students' progress through the years and are invested in helping each find his or her own success.

Widening the Circle

On this campus, we are all educators. Whether working as bus drivers, clerical and lunchroom staff, maintenance, administration or community volunteers, we are part of a circle of care, seizing the "teachable moment" on the playground, in the hallways, on the bus, in the garden or on a field trip.

"We are far from perfect, but we also know we are a really good school, a place where people are willing to be flexible, to commit to working hard for kids. We have a core belief that we are called to educate the head, the heart and the hands. People believe that here.    —Leadership report, 2009
