Group of students stand with teachers to show off their new devices and digital projectsThe secondary device 1:1 device deployment is just around the corner and excitement over technology is building at Lopez Island School District. Over the winter break, students were given the opportunity to receive their new laptops early and to learn more about cool features that the computers provide at the school's first-ever Winter Technology Camp. The goal of the camp was to foster tech leadership in the student body, strengthen students' technology skills, and to further enhance digital citizenship at Lopez School.

The camp was well attended and kicked off with the Lopez School "tech guy", Jesse Hammond, showing students basic functions of the device as well as suggestions on how to keep digital information secure and protecting student privacy while online. Math instructor, music master, and all around tech guru, John Platter, led the rest of the day's activities introducing the students to a smorgasbord of applications and features from the creative to the practical. By the end of the day, attendees felt confident in using their own devices, had learned about file organization, Microsoft programs, Google Apps, digital inking, and music production among many other useful tools.
