Announcing the "Path to Calculus" for students
Posted on 05/13/2025

Lopez Island School now offers an educational pathway to Calculus. This pathway would put students on track to take Calculus their senior year which is an expectation of many four-year colleges.
Students can opt in to the "Path to Calculus" in 7th grade or 10th grade.

7th Grade Option
7th grade students will be able to take 7th Grade Math and 8th Grade Pre-Algebra concurrently in their 7th grade school year. An evaluation of a student's math skills and approval from a math teacher will be needed for students to choose this option.

In the spring of their 7th grade year, eligibility for a student to continue in this pathway to take Algebra I as an 8th grader will be determined using the following criteria:
  • * Student interest and strong commitment to this pathway
  • * Middle School math teacher recommendation based on progress monitoring throughout the year
    * Test scores from common interim assessments and SBAC that demonstrate math readiness
    * B+ or higher in 8th grade Pre-Algebra (exceptions considered by the Accreditation Committee)

    10th Grade Option
10th grade students will be able to double-up on Geometry and Algebra 2 in their 10th grade school year. An evaluation of a student's math skills and approval from a math teacher will be needed for students to choose this option. Students who earn a grade of B+ or higher in Algebra II will be eligible to enroll in AP Precalculus in 11th (exceptions considered by the accreditation committee).

In the spring, eligibility for a 9th grade student in this pathway to take Algebra II as a 10th grader will be determined using the following criteria:
    * Student interest and strong commitment to this pathway
    * High school math teacher recommendation based on progress monitoring throughout the year
    * Test scores from SBAC that demonstrate math readiness
    * B+ or higher in Algebra I (exceptions considered by the accreditation committee)
