Grades 6, 7, 8Michael Coats Math

Michael Coats is our Middle School Math and Social Studies teacher.

After eleven years in the defense industry, Michael Coats happened to volunteer for an after-school math enrichment program.  This experience made him realize that his professional life was better spent helping kids learn math than making airplanes more efficient, sending him back to school to earn teaching credentials.  He believes that middle school is a critical time in math education, and he is committed to instilling and maintaining students’ confidence in their math abilities into high school and beyond.

Michael holds a bachelor’s degree from Western Washington University and a master’s degree from Rutgers, both in applied mathematics, as well as a master’s degree in teaching from Western Washington University.  In his spare time, he enjoys reading, games and puzzles, and spending time with his wife and teenage son.
