Grades 6-12Colleen Currie Middle School

Colleen Currie moved to Lopez Island in 2006 to teach middle school students, who love her interactive approach that connects classroom learning with the real world. She enjoys hearing from students that something they learned turned out to be relevant and interesting when they originally thought it wouldn’t be. “I want my students to know that they are capable of learning, understanding, and applying their knowledge in a variety of situations,” she says. “I want them to see how they can utilize the information learned to better both themselves and their community.”

Currie has a bachelor’s degree in humanities and a master’s degree in teaching from The Evergreen State College, and taught previously in Reno, Nevada and as a Peace Corps volunteer in Mali. She became a teacher because she sees it as one of society’s great equalizers. “I truly believe that we have more in common than we differ and being able to understand a variety of viewpoints will lead to a more cohesive world.”
