The creative energy of young people inspires Richard Carter, whose work with island youth extends from the school to the community. It was his work as director of Canoe Island French Camp and local community theater that prompted Carter to become a teacher. “It was a natural migration,” he says. He enjoys instilling self-confidence and less inhibition in his drama students – especially when they perform in front of an audience. His musical theater students love “ownership of what they create.”
The co-founder and director of Community Shakespeare Company on Lopez Island, Richard Carter received his bachelor’s in English from Vassar College and his master’s in fine arts from the University of Washington. Away from the classroom, he enjoys skiing, kayaking, sheep farming and volunteering as an EMT.
