Middle School teacher Huck Phillips wants students to learn more than academic skills: he hopes they develop empathy and a concern for the world around them. An organic gardener and kayak guide outside the classroom, he is able to share these personal skills and education at school through the L.I.F.E. garden and the farm-to-school program. Huck teaches students how to harvest, cook and preserve food every fall, and guides kayak trips each spring, “I like connecting with young people and helping them strive to learn and improve their skills."
Huck Phillips has a bachelor’s degree in organic farming from Evergreen State College and received his master’s degree in education from Antioch University. In 2004 he took a job on Lopez, where his students enjoy a relaxed and playful classroom atmosphere with high expectations. In his free time, he enjoys hiking, snowshoeing, kayaking and gardening, and volunteering for organizations such as Lopez Island Special Friends and Seattle Children’s Hospital.
