One of Kathie Epidendio Jacobs’ main jobs is to teach children who struggle with reading. “These students come to school early to put in extra time and a huge amount of focused energy to learn a skill that comes effortlessly to most of us. Their commitment inspires me to be the best teacher I can be every day to support them in their efforts.”
Jacobs’ favorite teaching moment is “when a child reads a book or story without any help for the very first time and finally, finally sees himself or herself as a reader. Their look of surprise and pride makes my day!” In turn, her students love the commitment she has for each one of them. “I think they know that I will never give up on them.”
Jacobs has worked more than 20 years as the district’s special education teacher. She has a bachelor’s degree in communicative disorders and was previously a teacher of the deaf and hard of hearing in California.
