Diane Mayer knew she wanted to become a teacher when she was volunteering in her own children’s classrooms. “I found out that I enjoyed sharing my love of math and science with young people,” she said. Now, she is still inspired when she sees how excited kids get about how the universe works. “It’s when I see the ‘Aha! I get it!’ moment on a student’s face,” she said.
Diane Mayer came to Lopez Island in 2008 after 14 years teaching math and science to middle school and high school students in other districts. She has a bachelor’s degree in physics with a mathematics minor from San Diego State University and a master’s degree in science education from Montana State University. She is a National Board Certified Teacher, a classification given to highly accomplished educators who meet rigorous national standards.
