Three times each year we change the elementary school pace with K-5 Discovery Days–a time when students select classes from an exciting menu that stretches their creative muscles, opens their eyes to a world of new possibilities and reinforces the joy of learning through play.
Organized by the elementary parent advisory committee, Discovery Days harness the skills and talents of the community by engaging parents, neighbors and friends as volunteer instructors. Kids head out to afternoon “classrooms” all over the island to learn archery, knitting, mountain biking, track, rocketry, kite making, videography, golf, tennis, firefighting/EMS, horseback riding and more. Depending on the skills and interests of the volunteers, the curriculum varies each season, assuring the vitality of this popular program.
The benefits of Discovery Days are far-reaching. Youngsters meet and connect with positive role models; volunteers enjoy working with our community’s children; and Lopez elementary teachers take time for staff development and collaboration.
"We get to share our passions and expertise during Discovery Days. For me, teaching Digital Photography, Boating & Island Exploring, Web Page Design and Treasure Hunting has been great. The students are so enthusiastic! I can’t wait for the next session to begin." —Dan Schober, Parent Volunteer Instructor
